Update to Trash Pick Up Rate IncreaseReply: Gayle Geer
I called Waste Management. I spoke with Carla, who was very pleasant.

She said the city set the parameters and the rate increase, not them. They said, even if we call the city (not sure which city),  there is nothing we can do to change it, as they painted a broad swath across our beautiful, peaceful plateau and said it's all "hard to service".

Our particular home is qualified as "hard to service" because our neighbors have livestock. There are many others issues, of course.

When I told Carla we were "just two old people with no livestock", she said we could qualify for a senior rate if one of us were 65 or older. Hubby does, but I'm still quite young at only 62. I asked her what the discount is for seniors. She double-checked and told me we won't qualify because we live in a "hard to service" area.  Double whammy!

We all qualify for two separate special pick-ups/year (certain items).  We can also ask them to pick up our old electronic waste...for nearly $40/item!

Anyway, I just thought I'd let y'all know what I found out.

Stay cool in the heat wave!

Re: WM Rate Increase 2Reply: Gayle Geer
Hugh, to answer your question; we live in a tracT home area, in the Santa Rosa Ranchos. All roads are paved in our area and in all the streets leading to our tracT, with curbs and easy access. I was hoping we would not be lumped in (price-wise) with the properties that are much larger and harder to get at (up dirt hills with ruts and such). That's all.

Thank you for the information, Nathan. Very helpful!

I do so appreciate your efforts (and those of the RAGLM board) which is why I support you.
Stay cool, if possible. Hot week ahead of us.

WM Rate Increase 2Reply: Hugh
IMPO Our area, Lake Mathews, Gavlin Springs and Hills is in a more difficult area for Wast Management to service when you compare it to a regular track home project. TRACK HOME: Mostly flat, 70' between trash containers, can serve 100 customers in less than an hour. Lake Mathews area: Hilly, remote, many difficult to access, homes are 200' to 300' apart, more trash than single family track homes, takes 3-4 times as long to service each customer. So, what is exactly your complaint about the charges?

It's important to distinguish between the Riverside County Waste Management Department and the waste hauler, Waste Management Inc. El Sobrante Landfill is a public/private landfill. Riverside County runs the gate and sets the fees. Waste Management Inc. does the hauling and overall running of the site.  You have to look at the world (and consider what you're told) with a jaundiced eye. Don't shoot the hauler when the County sets the fees.

WM Rate UpdateReply: Nathan
Good question as I have been meaning to post about it. I spoke with Kristen Huyck from Supervisor Jeffries Office and they have gotten WM to retract the rate increase. She told me that the Supervisors office would not allow the increase as WM had a contract at a certain rate. She told me they would be sending out retraction letters to all customers who received the increase letter.

That being said, I know recently that some where paying less than others and WM was going to even out everyone's rates to the standard rate so you might be one of those paying under the average and this may be why yours has increased. I want to say that the average rate was $21 / month but I am not 100% sure as I have a dumpster classified as commercial at $100 / month so my rate structure is different than the residential one. Kristen is at all of our monthly meetings and she will be at our meeting next week. I would urge you to come out and ask her about all the details. I hope this helps and not just confuses things further. Please forgive me but this is how I understood it. Not 100% sure where you personally fit in there but the good news is the recent rate increase will be retracted. Look for a letter coming in your mail.

Has anyone successfully had their increase decreased? We are not in a hard to service area, but our rate has increased $16.
