Welcome to Lake Mathews Signs - UpdateReply: Nathan
I just wanted to bring back the information that I have learned from the Transportation Department regarding the proposed signs. I spoke with them this morning and they answered my questions, see below. Their answers are in blue.

1. How many signs will there be?
Originally there were 3 proposed but he now believes there are only going to be 2.

2. What are the proposed locations for the signs?
One will be just west of Wood Road and the other will be just east of La Sierra.

3. What will be on the signs?
They will say "Welcome to Lake Mathews" and also include population and elevation based on the 2010 census numbers. They will be green with white writing. View the spec sheet here.

4. Who requested the signs?
They were requested by the residents via Bob Buster's office.

5. When will they go up?
He has no idea and stated that at this moment they have no plans to move forward with them.

6. Will there be a public hearing first?
No, this is not necessary as this is on County right of way property and follows the guidelines in the General Plan.

7. Who is paying for them?
The Transportation Department, they are around $300 each installed.

8. Will they have lights on them for night time?
No, no lighting.

9. Can we see them or get some specs on them?
They are exactly what is currently up in Mead Valley.

10. What is the population and elevation that will be on the signs?
They will be based on the 2010 census. View the specs here.

These are answers directly from Lawrence Tai at the Transportation Department. If you do not like the signs, PLEASE vote on them so we know how many like them and how many are against them.

Cannot Support The SignsReply: Cindy Ferry
Please make my post part of the record.  Until we know exactly what the signs will look like, the materials that will be used, the size and the number of signs and their locations, I cannot and do not support this proposed erection of signs in our community.

Clarification of Sign ProjectsReply: Nathan
Cindy,
I created this virtual tour in Google Earth at the boards request to show placement of the signs and where the board would like to see them placed. I donated about 4 hours of my time to create this so the community had a nice visual tool to see where the desired sign locations are. As for the amount of signs being placed in our area, I am still not 100% clear on how many they will be putting in. I have now been told 2 and 3. This is why in our presentation we state 'desired' locations and we have put them in order of priority as we saw it. Another reason for bringing it to the community so we can get feedback on the desired locations. Please have a look at the page that was created for the sign proposal. If you scroll down, it will give you some contact information of who is in charge at the Transportation Department. As I too am still not 100% sure of who is in charge of the project, I am awaiting a phone call back from the Transportation Department as I was instructed by Buster's office to contact them. As for the proposals looking similar in nature, this may have to do with the fact that they both are things in our area and directly effect our community of Lake Mathews so the overhead maps would be the same. As for signs starting at 2 and going to 6, I am not sure what you are talking about here as again this project has no relation to any another potential sign project. The initial number of signs on this particular project to my knowledge was 3. The RAGLM board discussed this issue and felt if we were going to get signs and may not have complete say in where they go, it might be a good idea for us to offer multiple alternative locations so we may have some say with regards to placement. This is the reason we have 5 locations on the presentation and they are marked in order of desired location. As for the rest of your post suggesting these signs are related to another project, that simply is not true and I hope we can keep the two issues separate so we do not confuse anyone in their understanding of the projects. Please remember, this project was brought to our attention, we chose to look into it more and inform our community of this project. At this time, RAGLM does not endorse this project. We are simply trying to relay information to the community and get feedback so we can decide what actions to take. Please know, we may not have any say in whether we get these signs or not, we are simply trying to bring the information to you in the best way we can. I sincerely hope this helps clear up the difference between the sign projects and our 'desired' placement of them. I again, will let you know as soon as I know more about this project.

County Sign PSA & Preserve the Plateau PSA - Who created these?Reply: Cindy Ferry
"Take a look at our virtual interactive tour of where we would like to see them placed."

Nathan, where did this vitural tour come from?  Who created it?  Who paid for it?  I'm told now that staff from Supervisor Bob Busters office has told residents at one of their MAC meetings that the county is only intending 2 signs on Cajalco Rd.  I want to know ... be told/informed ... who is overseeing this project and who proposed it in the first place.  Why is this virtual tour so much like the PSA Preserve the Plateau created and had at first been showing the same number of signs (2) and that project has now gone to 6 or 8 signs ... when it started with JUST 2 SIGNS ... that were to be rural type signs and are now electronic signs with downloadable blackberry info. boxes, placed on private property when I told the committee the residents wouldn't go for these signs and they would find them pulled down.  Signs with lighting that will light up when cars drive by, calling drivers to pull off the road and download info. and then pull back out onto the roadways of our major roadways with no lighting.  Will accidents thereby force (with very little push) the county to bring lighting in along these roadways ... for the safety of the community as a whole?  What doors do these signs open?

SignsReply: lid
What does the County not understand about our desire to remain rural. These signs will be welcoming all the trucks passing through on the Cajalco truck route, oh excuse me I guess they will be calling it a "parkway". The Transportation Dept. would like to dodge the issue of road maintenance for the trailer park and lead us to believe they have a short supply of $$, yet they sure seem to have plenty of money when it comes to a bunch of unnecessary signs.

to sign or not to signReply: Anne
I was wondering if some neighborhoods would not care for the signs, and I see that some understandably object. But if the signs in the outer areas would be a protection against regulations, as was originally put forth here, then it may be a good thing. No one actually asked for these signs. And I don't care if they go up or not. But foresight can be a good thing. We all want to be left alone without more government interference.

No to the SignsReply: BillB
Cindy, I too have difficulty getting my posts to show up. Could it be that we who are opposed to posting Gavilan Hills as the "Lake Mathews Community" don't count?

Community Signs--additional signs neededReply: Michael D
To cover all major paved access, an additional sign is needed at southbound Washington at Rabbit Scramble trail. I think the other signs are well located in relation to the COI boundaries; although there may be people near those boundaries that would prefer not to have these signs. I found the presentation easy to manipulate by pausing it and zooming as needed to see finer detail.
Another sign may be needed on on southbound Wood Road as well.

Am I missing something here?Reply: Sandy

I know that Mead Valley now has signs that say "Welcome to Mead Valley" and I have seen many, many signs like this all over Riverside County and Orange County.  There are signs along 74 that say "Meadowbrook" and signs that say "Romoland" and "Homeland".  There are signs on the 215 denoting Menifee, Murietta, etc.  I don't understand the concern with "Welcome to Lake Mathews" signs other than their placement on our boundary lines. Am I missing somthing here??

Welcome Signs - Some AnswersReply: Nathan
Thank you all for your comments and questions. Let me tell you what I know.

1. I was told by Bob Buster's office that it is being paid for and handled by the Transportation Dept.

2. These are not the PTP signs, this is a completely unrelated project.

3. We are currently trying to find out more information about the design, time frame, etc.

4. RAGLM did not request these signs, nor are we currently aware if anyone did.

5. As for placement of the signs, the RAGLM board feels they should be placed closest to the Lake Mathews COI boundaries. We are concerned that if they are too far inside the approved COI boundaries, this may allow the County to further erode our COI and take our rural area more easily in the future as they did recently with the Woodcrest boundaries.

6. The Lake Mathew COI approved 2002 encompasses Gavilan Hills, Lake Mathews Estates, Mockingbird Canyon South, areas of Woodcrest and more.

Keep in mind that we may have no choice on where they go, how many we get or if we get them or not. This is why we want to hear from you. We are currently looking into this project further and will let you know when we do.

Thank you all again for the feedback, please keep it coming.

Is this Welcome To Lake Mathews or Preserve the Plateau?Reply: Cindy Ferry
Who will be paying for these signs and how much will they be putting up to pay for these costs? Are they to be located anywhere near the Preserve the Plateau signs also proposed to go in around our community ... as I recall last discussion, they also planned eight (8) signs? Is this a joint effort by RAGLM and the Preserve the Plateau committee? Isn't it true that the county will NOT be able to stop other such/similar type signs from going up in our community if they allow these or the Preserve the Plateau signs to go up? Will we not be setting a precedence that could later litter our community with signs? Signs of any number or measure could then diminish our rural standing and invite smaller lots, more commercial and so on to come into our area. I am not in favor of that and cannot support that.

Opening The Door For Unlimited Lighted Signs In Our Rural CommunityReply: Cindy Ferry
I feel it is misleading to say "the county transportation dept. has decided to put up these signs. Was this their idea or did people that work for or with LineJump Productions go to the county and present this idea to them under the name of the Preserve the Plateau?
Until such time as the community has FULL disclosure of just what the signs will look like (all sides), size of the signs, liability for the signs and their upkeep costs I cannot support this idea. I'm requesting full disclosure as to who, whom and in what capacity others are in ANYWAY connected to these signs. Are these signs in ANY way connected to the "Preserve the Plateau" proposal? Are these signs in ANY way connected to, affiliated with, worked on with or by LineJump Productions?

Are these the same signs with a different name?Reply: Cindy Ferry

Please go to "PTP Sites & Signs of the times" and see where these signs are to be located. Seems to me that they have the same locations. Will there be two signs at these locations? Since I seem to have problems getting links to post at times to the RAGLM.org site, will someone from the RAGLM board be make sure this link gets posted there for the membership to view?

Why Are My Posts On This Issue Not Going Through? No To The SignsReply: Cindy Ferry
I've been trying to post to this site and it will not allow my post to go through and it was under 200 characters.  I do not want the signs.

Community SignsReply: Tori
Personally I feel that the signs are a little too far spread out.
I feel as though our area is more exclusive than these signs make it appear.  I certainly do not think that MEAD VALLEY can be called part of the lake mathews community.    (I am also using my wifes account to post this)  Sign number 2 should be right about at the fire station.  Not clear out at Alexander, way out there it is including too much of MEAD VALLEY.
ALSO the residents on WOOD in the new houses just north of cajalco i'm pretty sure they consider themselves Riverside?  not sure, but they too are a little far from "Lake Mathews"

Sign #1
the corner of VanBuren and Mocking bird?  wow, I guess so...  cause by the time you reach the END of mocking bird at el sobrante, you are right on top of the lake, but clear at the corner of van buren?  hell, i've done some installs and work at the houses near van buren and they DIDN"T EVEN KNOW THERE WAS A LAKE OUT HERE!  but that sign would be hard to judge where on mocking bird to place it...  so i guess its ok...

sign #4 should be moved east.  past the last street entering LAKE HILLS.  cause they are all LAKE HILLS or whatever...  not lake mathews...

sign number 3 is a NO BRAINER...  corner of La Sierra and Cajalco...
why put it on the curvy part of the road?  move it to where there is better visibility to place it...  not where people will blast past it and not see it...  there's not even any houses out there....

Sign number 5 is fine...  a little far away...  i'd move it another couple miles closer to the lake, but its fine...

anyways, my biggest complaint would have to be the mead valley placement of sign 2.
