Inspection TourReply: Laurie
Nathan, I'm glad that you were able to take this tour.

When myself and another resident took an inspection tour a few years ago, it was very informative.  Three days of tours of much of the aqueduct itself and of that interior and exteriors of dams at Diamond Lake and Lake Havasu, of generating plants along the aqueduct, and information sessions and Q&As.

I found it amazing how few pumping stations are actually required - so much of the water is actually moved by gravity (what an enginering feat!).

I wish that everyone had the opportunity to take these tours.

It was an eye-opener too, as to how fragile our water supply is here in Southern California.

Wow, I had no idea that, one, this had to be done, that, two, a tour was being conducted, and, three, I am soooo jealous. But it also looks like it was creepy. Hahaha

California GoldReply: Roy
I remember viewing a California Gold episode, and Huell Howser toured the same tunnel.  Maybe it could be ordered from PBS or borrowed from a library.  It was very good.  Nathan, you're a rare and lucky dog!  I love mines and such.  Next he's going to tell us he gets to water ski and fish in the lake.

Thanks for the infoReply: Sandy
Nathan, thanks for taking time out of your busy life to keep us all informed on the MWD and our lake.  Now we know why the lake is so low.

I knew nothing about this. I appreciate your post and am going to educate myself further on this.

Lake Mathews Low - Tunnel Maintenance TripPost: Nathan
I just thought I would share with you all some information and pictures from a San Jacinto Tunnel Inspection Tour I went on this morning. Every year, MWD shuts down the Colorado River Aqueduct so they can perform maintenance on the tunnels. This is why Lake Mathews is currently so low. It will be refilled once the cleaning is complete. This tunnel was just cleaned and I was very fortunate to be able to attend the inspection tour this morning.

Some simple facts:
The tunnel is 13 miles long
The tunnel cleaning machine travels at 4 mph
The tunnel descends 44 feet through this 13 mile stretch
We were 4200+ feet under the mountain

Please see the attached photo here.
