Children = Property?Reply: Tonette
I actually agree with both your points. We are protective of our children, and we want them to function well in society. We want to hae the final say in their welfare, and we should feel a responsibility in everyone's children. There's nothing wrong with that. What makes most of us nervous are fanatics on either side: those who are isolationist, and those who want to control everyone else's lives. I think we can raise our kids in a loving, nurturing environment at home, and also contribute to the general welfare of the community by volunteering where we see a need, not barging in where we're not wanted. If I didn't feel this way, I wouldn't volunteer as much as I do. And Willow, the number of words you use isn't really that important.

Bees? Ants? No, Humans.Reply: BillB
Sorry Willow, people ARE individuals with individual and creative minds. We were not made ants, or bees in a "community", nor are we meant to be drones. We choose to procreate and are held responsible (yes, morality demands individual responsibility) for the product of that action. God and nature demand that parents be responsible for their children. Anything else is social engineering run amok.

This is not just my opinion, it is the law of nature.

Bruno Bettleheim & the Kibutzim ~Reply: Willow
Way back in the dinosaur days a man named Bruno Bettleheim did exhausting studies on the similarities and differences among children raised in Israel where they are mandatorily taken from the parents within days after birth and are raised all together in large homes called Kibuztim which is plural for Kibutz.

When a year old falls there is no adult there to run to the chlld's aid and kiss the wound.  The child recovers on his own or maybe another child will respond.  These individuals, when reaching adulthood, are far less individualized and are more community oriented, kind of as are bees or ants.  They do not have the sense of 'family' as a unit as we do in our country where children are nurtured in the home with parents.

While I feel deeply against the child being owned by the government, I also have disagreement with children being more or less 'property' of the biological parents either.

In the Hope and Navajo Nations, the child is respected from the beginning as being his 'own' person.  A child has the choice of where and with whom he wants to live.  With whom he wants to apprentice. And with which people he wants to spend his time.  Any members of the community with whom children choose to spend time are greatly raised in status within their tribe by the children's choosing to spend time with them.   This, I believe, is the only way it should be.

Children become trapped in horribly abusive and destructive situations
by our society seeing the biological parents as 'owners' of the child.  I do not believe that living beings of any form should suffer 'ownership' by any other beings, not animals, and not children.  And I believe that the highest status available to be attained within a community should be gained by the way a person treats others, including those smaller and weaker and more helpless.  Anyone who provides for and gives shelter to those of lesser capabilities should be given the respect and admiration of the members of his community.

BTW, the character counters are not working for me.  I have no idea if I have exceeded the recommended 500 or not.

MSNBC ?Reply: BillB
Why does anyone even watch MSNBC? The whole station is an infestation of liberal Marxists spreading their vile propaganda!

About thirty years ago, in the first Gerry Brown go around, State S
uperintendent of Schools, Wilson Riles proposed that children be taken from their parents at school age and housed in government run schools. This, of course, was during the "international year of the child" in the '80s,a time when the UN decried parents as evil beings.
