Biologists Build Nesting Boxes On Lake Mathews ReservePost: Cindy Ferry
As you can see from the comments below this article, some seem to think this effort is of no use.  The fact is that the boxes are working and the owls are using them.  Their nests keep getting turned under as more and more homes come into the area.  Many don't even realize that the hole is a nest and turn it under.  These are beneficial birds and I feel we are doing the right thing to try and help them, by providing ready made nests.  I hope we will see more come back to the area and Lake Mathews Reserve is a good place to do this project.  If you've noticed the growth in the rabbit, mice and field rat populations of late, it due in part to the number of birds that live on these animals leaving the area.  This is the most natural rodent control we have and I think we should be doing all we can to keep them here and help them populate more.  If we want to keep this area "rural" then we need to be part of helping to keep the wildlife here, rather than chasing them away.
